Composites Portland cement, lime and sand based mortars are among the most widely used exterior and interior construction materials for coating masonary and clay blocks. Low cost, high compressive strength, high stiffness, ease of fabrication and non- flammability are the most obvious advantages, whilst low tensile strength, brittleness, flexability and to some extent, long term durability represent it's most serious limitations.

In order for a render to harden properly, it must retain water during the curing process. Only when this happens the Render can reach its full strength potential and ensure cement hydration. Circumstances that promote premature water loss in Render include applications:

  • Over highly absorbent substrates
  • When ambient temperatures are high, particulary above  30รง
  • On substrates when there is strong wind.

If render dries out  before cement hydration is complete it can also lead to a weak cement finish , that  may develop surface cracks or mapping.

A high performance improvement to portland cement mortars is the addition of acrylic polymer's (re- dispersable powders , based on acrylic pva's). The function of the polymer is to reduce mortar permeability and increase resistance to salts, flexural strength, toughness and adhesion. Weather resistive additives to the cement - mortar mix are highly recommended, their purpose serve to resist water intrusion while allowing water vapour to escape.Mortars containing Acrylic polymers possess a host of appealing features. Some of the most important are as follows:

  • Low water demand with good workability.
  • Excellent thin section toughness and adhesion.
  • Outstanding resistance to UV degradation.
  • Excellent thin set mortar  adhesion ( stucco, plaster )
  • Exterior durability.

On exterior cladding systems acrylic's are highly used for their flexural and adhesive strengths. Cement alone does not have the adhesive characteristics to bond to most substrates but a polymer- render system does.Reinforcing the cement- polymer render with mesh or fibres increases the toughness of thecoating and also aids in resistance to crack propagation and tensile strength.
